My morning routine is the single most impactful act of self-care that allows me to be the woman (and mama) I strive to be—it sets the tone for my entire day. One of the most impactful points in that routine is the nourishing smoothie I make for my whole family. In addition to tasting delicious and being easy to make, it lays a nutritional foundation for me and my kids that sets my mind at ease for the rest of the day.
Below is a list of all the ingredients we use (all organic) but we don’t use them all everyday. We need some variety! For example, cacao powder goes well with bananas, strawberries, and apple juice. While seeds, protein, almonds, coconut oil, coconut water, yogurt, and crushed ice go in every day, feel free to mix it up with the fruits and juices. There’s really no wrong way to combine these ingredients. My kids will often make the smoothie and it always tastes good (and is always delivering a nutritious start to the day).

From glass jars on an open shelf:
- Seeds (a mix of chia, flax, quinoa, millet, hemp, buckwheat)
- Protein (bone broth protein powder)
- Coconut (shredded and unsweetened)
- Almonds (slivered)
- Cacao Powder
- Coconut Oil
From the fridge:
- Almond Butter (crunchy)
- Coconut Water
- Yogurt (plain)
- Juice (apple, L&L coconut pineapple, or orange)
From the freezer:
- Ice (crushed)
- Spinach
- Kale
- Chard
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Bananas
- Avocados
- Pineapple
*Costco is a great source for the frozen ingredients. Though I also often bag and freeze fruit and veg that is going bad. Smoothies are a fantastic use of almost expired produce.
We make our smoothies in a Vitamix and drink them out of our wide mouth mason jars with silicone smoothie straws (low/zero waste kitchen shout out), which are also great to go! If we’re getting ready and going out, we bring our smoothies with us and drink them in the car with these lids.
