“We have to give them the neuroscience. This is going to strip any shame. It’s going to make it easier for them to turn and face and own their behavior. We really have to turn these feelings into allies and friends.”Karen Young
This is episode 92 and today I’m here with Karen Young talking about our inner warriors (anxiety).
Karen began her career as a psychologist working extensively with children, teens and families. She is a sought-after speaker and consultant and works with schools, government bodies, and child and adolescent focused organisations both in Australia and overseas to build resources, implement procedures, and support the professional development of staff. Karen is the founder of ‘Hey Sigmund’, an internationally popular online resource that provides contemporary, research-driven information on anxiety. She is the author of four books, including the bestselling ‘Hey Warrior’, which creatively assist children to understand and manage anxiety.
Presentation: We walk through some ways anxiety shows up that we may not initially recognize as anxiety.
Psychoeducation: We go over how we can frame anxiety for our children in a way that leaves them feeling integrated and empowered.
Self-Regulation: We share what we’ve found helpful for guiding our own nervous systems back to safety.
Co-Regulation: We explain how we can support a child through co-regulation whose warrior is standing tall.
Boundaries: We address how we can hold boundaries for safety while holding space for big feelings.
Repair: We discuss why repair is a potentially important part of the process.
Trauma: We discuss what we can do to help our children metabolize hard experiences so they don’t get stuck as a trauma.
