“Connection is the substrate of parenting and that rests on my connection to myself. When I have connection, the creative possibilities are endless just as they are when I have connection with my children. We come out of a stuck place and the space between us opens up and there is so much more room for everyone’s experience in that connection.”
Sjanie Hugo Wurlitzer
This is episode 86 and today I’m here with Alexandra Pope & Sjanie Hugo Wurlitzer talking about Menstruality.
Guest
Alexandra & Sjanie are the co-founders of Red School, and co-authors of the iconic and hugely celebrated book from Hay House, Wild Power: discover the magic of the menstrual cycle and awaken the feminine path to power and their latest book Wise Power: Discover the liberating power of menopause to awaken authority, purpose and belonging (Hay House, Sept 2022).
They are pioneering the new emerging field of menstruality, creating a new lexicon and approach to women’s health and wellbeing; creativity and leadership; and spiritual life based on the power of our menstruality consciousness.
Between them they bring over 45 years of experience. And today they teach worldwide on the psycho-spiritual process of maturation that unfolds from menarche to menopause and beyond. They’re committed to training the menstruality leaders of the future.
Highlights
Mainstream: We discuss how the mainstream experience of and relationship with menstruation is misguided.
Menstrual Cycle Awareness: We extend the invitation to menstrual cycle awareness.
Season: We share the four inner seasons.
Parenting: We walk through how to honor our cyclical needs in parenting.
1% Shift: We explain how we can step into honoring our cyclical needs 1% at a time and I love this quote from their book on this point: “If you had no cares or commitments, what would you love to do when your blood begins to flow. Let your fantasy roam wild and free. Can you give yourself 1% or more of that? Do the 1%. It’s always doable and it has an effect.”
We ran out of time before we could address these two remaining questions but I want to include them here because I believe in their importance and I want you to keep an eye out for them as you dive deeper into their work:
Critic: How can we shift our relationship with our inner critic in a way that connects us with her as an ally?
Partners: How can menstrual cycle awareness be a gift to our partners and our relationships?
Help with Mentstruality
Recording this episode today, I am on day 7 of my cycle, emerging slowly out of my inner winter for my dawning spring. As you listen to this episode and learn more about the inner seasons, see if you can tell in my quieter energy and my deeply reflective tone. In some podcast episodes I experience myself more like a bird, excitedly flitting around in the sky with a friend, and other times more like a mother bear on her sojourn into or out of the mountain. No particular season produces a better or worse podcast episode, in my opinion, I just notice the difference, honor it, and believe in the value of all of it.
Alexandra and Sjanie are so physically present and grounded in their bodies and they communicate a lot of emotion visually in a way that is a real value add to the experience of the conversation, so I want to remind you that the video versions of the podcast episodes are available inside the Sage Family Village, where we also support each other in the ongoing work of acknowledging and honoring our true needs, 1% shifts at a time.
